“Smartphone” economy driving job creation
New roles to support consumer demand for smartphones following “All You Can Eat” data launch.
Tuesday, 22nd March 2011: Three, Ireland’s largest high-speed network, today (Tuesday, 22nd March 2011) announces plans to create 50 new positions to support continuing growth and investment that has already seen Three become market leader for mobile broadband and the first operator to launch “All You Can Eat” internet for smartphone users. The 50 new roles are in addition to the 400 people Three already employs in Ireland.
Recruitment for the new roles across finance, product development and retail sales, is already underway. The new positions will be located in retail stores nationwide as well as at Three’s head office, One Clarendon Row, where Three has recently agreed plans to lease the remaining third floor (7,297 sq ft) of office space to complement Three’s existing presence on two floors in the building.
Today’s announcement reflects the continued strengthening of Three in Ireland which recently announced the successful completion of Ireland’s Government-commissioned National Broadband Scheme and the launch of Ireland’s first free ‘All You Can Eat’ data price plans for smartphone users. Today’s announcement strengthens Three’s employee base to meet the growing consumer demand for smartphones on Ireland’s largest high-speed network.
Welcoming today’s announcement Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. Pat Rabbitte stated, “Three is playing a significant role in terms of the quality service and competition it offers to consumers in Ireland. Three has been a significant driver of mobile broadband penetration through its delivery of the National Broadband Scheme. The “smartphone” economy is vital to Ireland’s future and I am heartened that Three is strengthening its presence here with the addition of a further 50 new jobs to its already 400-strong workforce.”
According to Robert Finnegan, Chief Executive, Three, this expansion is a clear signal of Three’s ambition to strengthen its position in the Irish market in the coming years.
“Today’s announcement demonstrates the power of the new “smartphone” economy — we’ve talked about the “smart economy” for years but the explosion of the smartphone is changing the way consumers use the internet for good and it is driving economic growth around the world. 2011 is the year of the smartphone — 340 million people will buy one this year alone and Three will be at the forefront of this new mobile phenomenon in Ireland. These new roles enhance our ability to manage the huge consumer demand for smartphones, particularly with Three’s introduction of Ireland’s only “All You Can Eat” price plans that give consumers free mobile internet access” said Robert.
Three has launched a number of business developments in recent months that support growth and expansion. Having fully embraced the smartphone revolution, Three states that 60% of phones sold in Ireland on their network are smartphones. With this figure expected to reach 90% by the end of 2011, it is a priority growth area for the network operator.
“Having pioneered the mobile broadband segment, which we continue to lead, Three is aggressively pursuing the exploding smartphone segment. Following our recent launch of Ireland’s first “All You Can Eat” data price plans for smartphone users, we achieved a 40% increase in new customer connections in the first week.
