In this lecture Diarmuid Cahalane will examine the expanding role Sustainable Urban Drainage Schemes (SUDS) from water quality to include biodiversity and amenity developments. The need for Ireland to adopt a coherent national policy will also be explored in this lecture and Diarmuid will advise on guidance documents available for designers of SUDS.

SUDS retrofittng has proved beneficial in urban areas in North America and Australia and is now being promotoed by UK Water Authorieis and Diarmuid will look at these retrofits using initiatives such as the “Green Streets” in the UK and “10,000 Rain Gardens” in Melbourne, Australia.
