Today’s #MotivationMonday Tip is…Introduce Reward and Recognition Schemes
Reward and recognition schemes which recognize the accomplishments of an individual or team can be a great way to motivate staff.
However, recognition schemes can backfire if employees perceive them as insincere or inappropriate. There is a connotation that recognition schemes are manipulating employees. For example, in some organisations the “employee of the month” would not be in keeping with the organisation’s culture and could be a demotivator.
Therefore, to avoid this allow employees to participate in the initial design of the process and give staff the opportunities to recommend and recognize their peers and participate in giving the awards.
More importantly, the recognition and praise should be specific to the individual and the accomplishment. Praise should be clear and specific, and the process should respect the employee’s personality.
A simple idea could be to have a Gratitude Board where anyone can put a short note on the board to thank someone for something they did, or for going the extra mile to help others – be it a colleague or manager. This will allow instant recognition and can be very powerful in motivating staff and boosting morale.
Ultimately, everyone wants to have their efforts rewarded and it is ensuring that this is done in the most effective manner which will reap dividends.
What is Excellence Through People?
Ireland’s only certification scheme for effective human resource development is the NSAI’s Excellence Through People (ETP) scheme.
This guide provides organisations with the tools they need to ensure their employees are motivated, developed and working to their full potential.
